The first thing when you meet a person is you ask his or her name. Then the conversation begins. The difference between over 1 billion people in India is firstly their names. It is how they are identified. You can be singled out from a crowd just by calling out your name.

The name of a person is his identification. Any government document or important dossiers begin with the requirement of a name. The surname is procured it from the father. That’s the paternal inheritance every Indian gets. So a baby born in India gets a new name while the surname of the father is attached.

Indians especially the Hindus believe that every name should have a meaning, as the meaning will ultimately affect the personality of a person. Infact the belief is so strong that the planets that most affect a particular month the baby is born in is taken into consideration. From there the initial of the baby’s name is drawn. Hence Indian baby names are distinguishable from the world over.

It could be any name; even two babies born in the same month could have different initials because their characteristics are different. A few Indian baby names that are common are Aditya, Abhishek, Abhijeet, Chandrashekar, Kishore, Raj, Suraj, Yash while a few common girl names include Chayya, Deepa, Divya, Deepti, Priya, Sangeeta, Seema, Uma etc.

The naming ceremony is a very auspicious occasion in India. There are some traditions you follow. The Hindus have a pooja, where the holy priest blesses the child with his or her name. Then the function begins. People come dressed in their best of attires and the party begins. Among Christians the baby is blessed with holy water and he or she is anointed with the new name. This happens a month after the baby is born. Where as for the Hindus it could be three to six months after the baby is born. Infact it all depends on the Shubh din, that is the auspicious day.
